Designer Q&A
Looking to hire an interior designer?
Don’t know where to start? Here are some questions you should be asking!
What is your design style (company in question)?
Clients often want to know about the designer's aesthetic and whether it aligns with their own preferences. Talented designers can curate spaces to match anyone taste, but it’s always good to know where they are coming from. A well developed eye is also a huge bonus, often times why you are hiring them in the first place!
What is your design process?
Clients may inquire about the step-by-step approach the designer takes to complete a project. Every designer services their clients needs differently. Some do online programs now, its important to know the steps to that process as well! Consider this if you are living in a different state than your design team.
Can you work within my budget?
Budget is a crucial factor, and clients want to ensure that the designer can create a beautiful space within their financial constraints.
If you are having trouble figuring out your budget, have a preliminary conversation with your designer before contracting them. Often times clients who have a hard time putting a number to their budget, become sticker-shocked. This is where designers get a “high end” price label to the industry. Yes, there are high-end designers, there are designers for every budget, so again this is key to understand how you want to spend your money.
How long will the project take?
Timeframe is important, and clients want to have a realistic expectation of when their project will be completed.
Designers can help you get a realistic expectation on your timeframe based on the scope of work presented to them. Keep in mind that every project will experience some sort of delay or another. Patience is key here!
What services do you offer?
Some designers specialize in specific areas, so clients may ask about the range of services provided.
Can you show me examples of your previous work?
Portfolios help clients understand the designer's style and competence. They might ask for examples relevant to their project. Websites and social media sites are helpful tools for customers to see previous work, but not always. Smaller organizations, or one-man (one-woman) shows, will likely not have the time or resources to photograph, edit and post every single project. So if you are looking for something specific, just ask!
How do you handle changes or revisions during the project?
Clients may want to know about the flexibility of the designer in accommodating changes during the design process. Sometimes this will result in a change-order, or additional hours billed due to changes, and some designers account for these changes up front. It’s good to know which way your designer is pricing things!
Do you have a network of contractors and suppliers?
Having reliable connections can make the project smoother, so clients might ask about the designer's professional network.
Most designers will work with who ever you have in your roledex, but they will also come with their preferred professionals for each trade. Typically these individuals will be contracted out by you (the client) and the designer will work along side them.
What is your fee structure?
Understanding the cost structure, whether it's hourly rates, flat fees, or a combination, is crucial for clients.
As mentioned above, each designer or design firm will price projects differently, if the information is not available to you, ask during your first meeting.
How do you stay updated on design trends?
Clients might be interested in knowing how the designer keeps up with the latest trends and innovations in the industry. This is pretty self explanatory!
Can you help with sustainable or eco-friendly designs?
With increased awareness of environmental issues, clients may inquire about the designer's approach to sustainable design. There are sustainable brands, fabrics, furniture companies, the list goes one! If this is important to you, make sure your designer knows up front so the whole design team can make sure to source as many goods as possible from a sustainable company. Sustainable reports are published every year by manufacturers.
What is the role of the client in the design process?
Clients often want clarity on their involvement and responsibilities throughout the design project.
Designer + client relationship is crucial! That’s why it is so important to feel comfortable with your designer. It becomes a very close relationship, especially for large on-going projects.
